Texas
Highway 16 it seems is the road to everywhere in the
Hill Country. Highway 16 in the Hill Country runs
from San Antonio northward through Bandera, Medina,
Kerrville, Fredericksburg and then further Northward
towards Llano and beyond.
The
section of Texas 16 we are covering here is the area
from Kerrville south to Bandera. I like to call Highway
16 the road to everywhere. From Kerrville you can
take it North to Fredericksburg, Luckenbach, Enchanted
Rock, Willow Loop and points further North, such as
Llano.
Heading
South out of Kerrville you can take 16 to connect with
the 3's (335, 336, and 337) or FM 470 which will take
you to Tarpley and Utopia and then to the best kept
secret in the Hill Country... FM 1050. Take FM 1050 all
the way to Leakey. FM 1050 is another great Hill Country
road with lots of twisty turns for you to enjoyment. If you
elect to stay on Highway 16 and not take any side trips
it will take you take it all the
way to Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of Texas. Once in
Bandera you can take 173 South and head towards Hondo
which is another nice ride and takes about 30 minutes to
complete from Bandera.
If you are a new rider or
lack much riding experience then Texas 16 South out of
Kerrvile is NOT be the ride for you. Once you get about
12 miles South of Kerrville 16 crosses over the Medina
Mountain and that is not a road for beginners to be on.
There are some very tight turns going up and over the
mountain. If you are an experienced rider, take this
route for some exciting riding and breathtaking scenery
but head the warnings about the turns and 15 mph speed
limit. Any faster and you may not make the turn. If we
have recently had any heavy rains be careful of loose gravel
on the turns. You won't be disappointed on this ride.
There
are some nice places to stop along the way on 16. The
first stop you might consider is Koyote Ranch. They
welcome bikers with open arms and have available food,
beer, gasoline and a very pleasant relaxed atmosphere
not to mention, excellent lodging for the visiting
motorcyclist.
The next stop is in Medina
at the Cider Mill and Country Store. Stop in for some
coffee and fresh homemade apple pie or to just look
around at the unique apple products they carry. If you
are heading to Leakey or Vanderpool via 337, you will see
the sign for 337 when you come into Medina on your right. If you need
fuel, this would be a very wise time to refuel, since
there are not any other places to fuel up before
reaching Leakey or points to the south such as Bandera.
Now would be a good time to purchase fuel.
