Cruising The Texas Hill Country

Our next ride takes us south on Highway 16 to Medina then on to Vanderpool and Leakey on Ranch Road 337. Ranch Road 337 is NOT for the faint of heart. This road follows canyons and climbs over mountains and has so many tight twisty curves that I lost count. If you are an experienced rider, then this is the road for you. If you like scenic views this is the ride to take.

Ranch Road 337 was also voted #1 road to ride in Texas by Ride Texas Magazine© readers and rightly so. It is a great road to ride..

As you leave Kerrville head South on 16 across the Guadalupe River towards Medina. The ride is about 30 miles. When you reach Medina take a right on to Ranch Road 337. Ranch Road 337 will take you through Vanderpool and then on to Leakey, TX. On this ride we will take a side trip to The Lone Star Motorcycle Museum. Continue on 337 until you reach Ranch Road 187 at Vanderpool. Turn right on to Ranch Road 187N and continue for 4 miles and the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum will be on the left. This is a worthwhile side trip and will only detour you for a few miles.

The Lone Star Motorcycle Museum displays a wonderful collection of motorcycles from around the world dating from the 1910's to modern. It will be a very enjoyable stop on this trip. Inside the museum is the "Ace Cafe".  The Ace Cafe offers Gourmet Hamburgers, Aussie meat pies, salads, deserts and hot and cold drinks. Bring your camera for this stop. Admission to the museum is $5.00 for adults.

After you leave The Lone Star Motorcycle Museum, head south on 187 until you reach Ranch Road 337. Turn right and continue on to Leakey. The stretch of road from Vanderpool to Leaky is a motorcycle enthusiasts dream. It has a lot of sharp turns, hills and scenic views. The trip from Vanderpool to Leakey is about 35 miles. You will more than likely encounter many motorcycles on this stretch of road so please be careful and enjoy the ride.

When you reach Leakey, at the intersection of 337 and 83 continue straight on 337 for 1/4 of a mile and you will see the NEW Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop. They just opened this new location in April of 2007. Stopping at the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop while in Leakey is just one of those stops you just have to make. To quote the owners, Bob and Robin Albright, "Our place has became an oasis in the middle of nowhere." It's a fun place to visit and rest for spell.

The owners are wonderful people and make all visitors feel welcome. The Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop provides a wealth of information about where to ride and what to see and you can even buy Hill Country maps that have an amazing amount of  information. They can also give you more information about riding the rest of the "Three Sisters" (335, 336 & 337). The Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop isn’t really a motorcycle shop, but they do carry items that might help you get by in a pinch along with food, drinks, Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop T-shirts and gifts.

When you leave the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop you can continue riding the 3's armed with the information they provided or follow the route below back to Hunt, Ingram and then Kerrville. If you need fuel at this point, refuel before leaving Leakey.

Back to Kerrville:

From The Frio Canyon Bike Stop take Highway 83 north until you reach Highway 39. Take highway 39 all the way back to Hunt. The ride on Highway 39 has many curves along with low water crossings and crisscrosses the South Fork of the Guadalupe River many times. Be VERY careful on Highway 39 as it is very easy to get caught up in the scenery and miss one of the many turns the road takes. When you reach the end of Highway 39 you will be in Ingram, TX. just west of Kerrville at the Intersections of Highway 39 and Highway 27.

Stop at the "Old Ingram Loop" at the end of Highway 39 in Ingram. Park your bike and enjoy the walk. You will be able to see craftsmen and artists at work. Finished pieces are always ready for purchase. Retail shops offer a variety of excellent quality merchandise, including antiques, pottery, leather goods, furniture, copper, wood carvings, and jewelry and so many other original choices.
